NPVRC–Online Collection News
Last year and over the summer, the local collection of digital images, which began on a test server at https://npvrc.newpaltz.edu, has grown to over 9,000 images. Recently, the data was copied to a new server at https://mdid.newpaltz.edu, and the logistics and space for storing the image files were resolved by Academic Computing. Many of the slideshows created by faculty before April of this year were also duplicated on the campus server. However, more recent work you may have done with the database will not be found on the campus server.
The upshot is that if you have been using the test server, you may continue to do so since I will keep adding images to it as they are loaded onto the campus server. Remember, though, that at some point after a year or so, the test server probably will not be updated further. So if you haven’t used NPVRC before, or wish to use a campus server that would certainly be more robust than my test server, it might be best to “start fresh” on the campus server at https://mdid.newpaltz.edu. New faculty users please enter your usual New Paltz computer user id and password to log on. Past users of the test server may use the same userid and password on the new server. Note: your test server id and password would not be compromised if the test server is taken down in the future.
NPVRC so far covers all teaching areas, but emphasizes areas that required new digital images or groups of slides from the slide collection for courses taught over the last 18 months, including Ancient Greek and Roman Art, 20th Century Art, Asian Art, and Photography. Professor Emeritus William B. Rhoads’ teaching slides for Architecture of New York City are also included.
Any member of SUNY New Paltz’s teaching faculty who would like a tutorial in order to explore NPVRC is welcome to contact me for an appointment. I am in the slide library from 9 am-5 pm, Monday through Friday, but until September 4th, I am available evenings as well, also by appointment.
