This course is about the concepts necessary for designing and using database management systems. We will study the relational data model, normal forms, query processing, and Oracle, which is a major relational database management system. See the table of contents of chapters one through six of the text for a list of the specific topics we will cover.

Rob, Peter and Carlos Coronel, Database Systems: Design, Implementation, and Management, Fourth Edition, 2000, Course Technlolgy, ISBN: 0-7600-1090-0. This book will be available at the College Bookstore.

Examinations.
I will give two exams and several end-of-chapter quizzes on dates that I will announce in advance.
The time for the final exam is Thursday, Dec. 13, 11:30 A.M. - 1:30 P.M.
I do not give make-up exams or quizzes for exams or quizzes missed during the semester. I will excuse you from an exam or quiz only if you present substantial documentation of a serious illness or personal emergency that prevented your attendance.

Grades.
I will compute your grade from a course average with the following weights:
End of chapter quizzes - 20%
Two in-class exams - 15% each.
Final exam - 30%
Projects - 20%

Notice.
I do not permit my classes to be recorded.
I enforce the College policies that prohibit eating and drinking in classrooms. Please cooperate by respecting these regulations.
