This document.
I have posed this document and additional material for this course on my web site. Go to my home page at http://www.mcs.newpaltz.edu/~zuckerma and follow the Course Information link to the material for Calculus-1.

Prerequisite.
The prerequisite for this course is a grade of at least C- in 64181, Pre-Calculus, at SUNY-New Paltz, or a Math Placement Level of at least five. If you try to remain in this course without the prerequisite, you will be dropped from the class. In order to avoid substantial inconvenience and additional registration fees you should understand your options concerning the Mathematics Placement Exams. (See the Fall Schedule of Classes.)

Text.
Deborah Hughes-Hallett, et. al, Calculus, 3rd edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2002.

Graphing Calculator.
A graphing calculator is required for this course. I strongly recommend one in the Texas Instruments series TI-83, 85, 86, etc. If you already have another graphing calculator, you may continue to use it, but I may not be able to help you operate it.

Syllabus.
We will study selected topics in chapters one through five of the text.

Attendance.
This is a four credit course that meets only three times a week. Each class is an opportunity for you to build and validate your understanding of the material. Therefore, your attendance and active participation will be major determinants of what you will learn from the course.

I will assume from your presence that you have constructed some useful understandings from the class. I will infer from your absence that you have not. Accordingly, I will deduct one-half point from your course average for each absence beyond three. (I will compute your course average on a twelve-point scale on which A = 12, A- = 11, etc.) This deduction is not a penalty; I assume all absences are necessary. It is a method of quantifying and reporting an estimate of what you have learned from the course.

Class preparation.
I expect you to be present and prepared to particpate in each class. Your presence and participation will be important parts of your learning experience.

Assignments and other course material.
I will post assignments and other material for this course on Blackboard.
If you are registered for this course, you will have access the material for this course that will I post there.
If you are not familiar with Blackboard, read the instructions at http://newpaltz.edu/~zuckerpr/board.htm.
I will assign study material and homework problems from two sources:
The textbook.
The textbook publisher's eGrade website, which is at http://egrade.brownstone.net/egrade/classes/zuckerman/
Follow the above link to the eGrade web site to register as a user of eGrade.
When I assign homework to be handed-in in class, submit your work on 8½ x 11 inch paper. Write on only one side of a page, put your name on each page, do not fasten the pages together, and do not use pages torn from a spiral bound notebook.
I do not grade late assignments.

Examinations.
I will give two in-class exams during the semester. I will announce the dates of the exams in advance.

The time for the final exam is Monday, December 16, 8:30 - 10:30 A.M.

I do not give make-up exams for those exams missed during the semester. I can excuse you from an in-class or final exam only if you present substantial documentation of a serious illness or personal emergency that prevented attendance.

Grades.
I will compute your grade from a course average with the following weights:
Two in-class exams - 20% each.
Assignments - 20%.
Final exam - 40%.
I will adjust this average according to the attendance policy.

Notice.
I do not permit my classes to be recorded.
I enforce the College policies that prohibit eating and drinking in classrooms. Please cooperate by respecting these regulations.
