This course will be devoted to Unix systems programming projects involving web server scripting, network programming, distributed computing, and database interfacing. We will begin by studying the language PERL, a language that is very suitable for this work.

Prerequisite
The prerequisite for this course is a passsing grade in the Department of Computer Science Preliminary Exam.

Attendance.
During the class meetings we will discuss topics and examples that are not in the textbook. You should plan to attend each class.

Programming Assignments.
I will give several programming assignments. The work you submit for grading should be your own, independent work.

Examinations.
During the semester I will give two in-class exams on dates that I will announce in advance.

The time for the final exam is Tuesdayy, May14, 5:30 - 7:30 P.M.

I do not give make-up exams for those exams missed during the semester. I can excuse you from an in-class or final exam only if you present substantial documentation of a serious illness or personal emergency that prevented attendance.

Grades.
I will compute your grade from a course average with the following weights:
Programming assignments - 60%
Two in-class exams - 10% each.
Final exam - 20%.

As the semester progresses, I will post course material on web pages.
Shortly after the start of the semester the on-line material for this course will be available through Blackboard.
