My Eight Simple Rules of Academic Integrity
When you choose to take this class, it is your responsibility to read the following
statements thoroughly.
"Attitude, Respect, and Responsibility"
- Please read the school's academic
integrity policy carefully. It defines Cheating,
Forgery, and Plagiarism.
Ethical misconducts related to cheating, forgery, and plagiarism result
in an automatic "F" for the course and may also subject to dismissal
from the program. Working on homework assignments together is
encouraged. However, it does not mean that you can hand in exact
same copies for all people involved. After your discussion, each
of the participating individuals should take the knowledge from your
discussion and solve the problem independently. During the test,
you should focus on your test and not peek into your neighbor's
work. You should also keep your test straight in front of
you. Ask for permission to go to rest rooms. If you wear
baseball hats to the test, turn the visor to the back so that I can
read your eyes.
- Tardiness causes disruptions of the classroom
learning process. You should respect
other students' and the instructor's right of having a non-interrupted
class environment. I usually takes the first few minutes setting
up the classroom for lecture and taking attendance. Attending the
class after my attendance check cannot guarantee your attendance is
counted.
- If you do arrive late, showing your respect to others by not cutting in
between the instructor and his/her students. If the classroom
setting does not allow you to avoid such interruption, at least bend
while you pass. Failure to comply with this rule will cause a 1.5
point deduction of your term score.
- Unnecessary wandering and chatting during my
lecture: unless
once in a while physical need that force to leave the classroom for a
while, please try to take care of your other businesses before entering
the classroom. Moving out and into the classroom during my
lecture causes interruption. If you do have the need to leave and
come back to the room, again do not cut in between the instructor and
his/her students. Failure to comply with
this rule will cause a 1.5
point deduction of your term score.
- Cell phone and other electronic devices that
generate noise should be turned off before the class unless permitted
by the instructor for emergency situation such as your wife is
expecting a baby. Failure to comply with this rule will cause a
1.5 point deduction each time.
- I will try my best to answer your course related
questions during my office hours, non-office hours, and through
Blackboard. If you choose to ask a question through electronic
media, please use the "Discussion Board"
in Blackboard, where my
answer can be shared by other students or other students may be able to
answer your questions before I read it. I will not answer course
material related questions sent to my personal email account because of
the non-sharing property of personal email.
- When asking questions, please ask a specific
question instead of complaining about non-specific issues such as "I
have no clue ....You never cover .. Nobody can do it.".
From my experience, those complaints come from students who miss lots
of classes or did not do their assignments. I always make sure
that students understand the materials before moving forward. So
there is no room for such complaints. I posted a great deal of
lecture materials on Blackboard. Please read the posted materials to find the answer
first.
- When sending email to me on personal issues
(remember to send course material related issues to Blackboard), use
the proper solutation first time. Do not use "Hi", "Hey",
"Ho". You can skip that during subsequent "reply-to" exchanges.
The most important thing is to bring a right attitude
to the course where you take your responsiblities seriously; respect
other people's right; try your best for tests and assignments. In
return, I respect your personal needs that sometimes you do need to
miss a class or cannot hand in a homework. As a result, I will
drop one homework assignment and serveral attendance counts at the end
of the semester so that those needs will not have any impact to your
grade. With respect and responsibility from both sides, we will
have a pleasant semester learning together. I always feel that I
learn a lot from my students either on course related materials or
their personal experience.
