SUNY-New Paltz • Department of Geography

John I. Sharp  is a new member of faculty in the Geography Department at SUNY New Paltz.  He recently completed his studies in geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a dissertation on discourse and public policy making, using riverboat casinos in the Midwest as a case study.  More recently his research has focused on global discourse looking at international variance in the mass media coverage of geopolitics, Iraq in particular. John is also a frequent presenter of papers at regional and national geographic meetings including the Association of American Geographers, the Urban Affairs Association, Critical Geographers, the Middle States Division of the AAG, and the Applied Geography Conference. Recent publications include:  "Neighborhood Responses to Crime and Disorder: The Effects of Housing Tenure" which appeared in Papers of the Applied Geography Conference (2008); "Sourcing the Coverage in the Invasion of Iraq: A Comparison of Domestic and Foreign News" which appeared in the Middle States Geographer (2007); "Geographic Variation of Truth Claims: Reporting on Iraq" which appeared in Papers of the Applied Geography Conference (2007); "The Political Geography of Gambling in the Midwest" which appeared in the Middle States Geographer (2004); "The Transformation of a Working-Class Neighborhood in Burlington, Vermont," which appeared in the NESTVAL Proceedings (2003); and "The (Un)Contested Geography of American Indian Casinos in New York" which appeared in the Middle States Geographer (2002).

John has served SUNY-New Paltz as a member of the Academic Senate, Academic Affairs Committee, Liberal Arts & Sciences Senate, and as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Board.  He also serves the wider community as an executive member of the Friends of the Catskill Interpretive Center and as a participant in Mid-Hudson Pattern for Progress.  He also looks forward to continuing his commitment to teaching and advising students at SUNY New Paltz and becoming a more integral part of the Department of Geography and the wider New Paltz community.
