About the NAPCN at New Paltz Conference

Constructivist Psychology at the Millenium: Future Directions in Research and Practice continued the traditions of the previous NAPCN conferences to further explore and elaborate constructivism, personal construct psychology, and related ideas. Theorists and practitioners identifying with constructivist-compatible perspectives such as narrative discourse, postmodernity, personal construct psychology, social constructionism, self-organization, and other frameworks based on the idea that realities are constructed rather than discovered, joined this gathering.

Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree

 
Dr. Franz Epting
Franz R. Epting, Ph.D.

Dr. Epting has been active in personal construct psychology for nearly 40 years. His scholarship includes work on death threat, constructivist assessment and psychotherapy, human science methodology, and--more recently--constructivist approaches to sexuality and gender. He has written four books and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Active in both constructivist and humanistic psychology, Dr. Epting's mentoring has impacted the careers of his many students during his more than thirty year tenure at the University of Florida. As he readies himself for retirement, NAPCN honors his lifetime's work as a scholar, colleague, and friend.

Dr. Raskin is a member of the Steering Committee of the North American Personal Construct Network, editor of the Constructivist Chronicle (NAPCN's newsletter), book review editor of the Journal of Constructivist Psychology, and co-editor (with Bob Neimeyer) of the recent APA Press volume Constructions of Disorder: Meaning-MakingFrameworks forPsychotherapy. The North American Personal Construct Network (NAPCN) is devoted to elaborating and communicating constructivist theories and methods, with particular emphasis on personal construct psychology. NAPCN membership is open to anyone world-wide. NAPCN organizes a biennial conference in even calendar years, and participates in an International Personal Construct Psychology Congress in odd calendar years (hosting the conference on a rotating basis with constructivist groups from Europe and Australasia).
The Psychology Department at SUNY New Paltz is one of the largest departments of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In addition to a strong undergraduate program, the Department has an M.A. graduate program in psychology with areas of concentration in Counseling Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and Experimental Psychology. The department has 13 faculty members, 30-50 graduate students, and nearly 300 undergraduate majors.

Conference Outings/Events

FDR Home/National Historic Site
A trip to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's home took place.  The FDR home is a national historic site and just one of the many historical and scenic places to visit in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Barbeque
An outdoor barbeque took place on the evening of July 14.

Gala Banquet
A gala banquet was held on the evening of Saturday, July 15. Dr. Epting was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this banquet. The student paper award winner was also announced.

Hiking in Minnewaska State Park
A hiking trip in nearby Minnewaska State Park took place on the morning of Sunday, July 16.
