Where They Live : Pampas of Patagonia, Argentina, and western Chile.

Size : Up to 35 pounds, 30 inches long.

Lifespan : 8 years.

Breeding : Only a few hours in June-July, and in September-October.

Habits : Socialble, living in small groups.

Diet : Plant material, including grass, leaves, buds, and garden plants.

    The Patagonian Cavy is a close relative of the guinea pig, and it is also known as the mara. Active in the day, it is the largest of all cavies. It lives in arid regions, excavating intricate tunnels to live in, or living in burrows abandoned by other animals. It is gregarious, living in groups of 5-10, but it is monogamous, staying with one mate for life. It has been known to run at speeds of 28 mph over long distances. Home range is about 96 acres.
