One of the loudest conures from South America, the nanday conure can withstand below-freezing temperatures, if acclimatized. They live in large groups, but pairs stay close together to roost and nest.  Like other parrots, it makes its nest in the cavity of a large tree where both parents help in raising the young. The nanday can also nest in palms and occasionally in thick fence posts where it can lay 3-5 eggs over a 2-3 day interval. Young birds become independent around 8-11 weeks old.  Nandays bond by scratching each others' heads.  Nanday flocks are typically from 6 to 40 birds, with as many as 300 birds in some rare flocks.  They can use plummage as camoflage, and when threatened, they screech as they fly up onto a nearby tree limb or bush.
