The colobus monkey is very shy. It has hindquarters that are longer and stronger than its forequarters, which helps it to leap from tree to tree. It has reduced thoumbs, or no thumbs at all. In fact, its name comes from the Greek colobus meaning mutilated, referring to its lack of thumbs.
The colobus monkey has a specialized and complex stomach, which is divided into pockets or chambers, banded by two longitudinal muscles.  Its stomach processes the cellulose contained in leaves it eats.
Colobus monkeys travel only 500-600 yards per day, at a much higher elevation in the trees than fruit and insect dependent monkeys.  They are territorial and will defend their area with threatening calls and displays.
