Quantitative Methods for Business Research

Spring 2006

#For the class, January 31
    1) Please read chapter 1

#For the class, February 7th:
1)Please read chapter 3 to refresh your memory about basic statistics
2)Please open PHSTAT2 (Please install your CD)
3)Please retrive data, Mutual Funds.xls from your CD in your textbook
(Put CD in your CD Drive. Run the PHSTAT2.
In PHSTAT2, go to File -> Open (go to your CD rom drive) ->browse
        -> EXCEL data files.
Then you can get the data.)

4)Using the data, Mutual Funds.xls and PHSTAT2,  please practice the followings:
        a) take 15 funds using Simple Random Sampling  and print them out
        b) take 15 funds using Systematic Sampling and print them out
        c) take 15 funds using Stratified Samping (Use "type" as strata) and print them out
        d) take 15 funds using Cluster Sampling (Use "objective" as cluster) and print them out
(Note: It is good idea to write down all procedures that you have used for (a) thru (d))
5)Please check this site again for more posting (if any)

# For the class, February 14th:
    1) Please read chapter 4
    2) From mutual funds data, Mutual Funds.xls, we like to know about the expense ratio of mutual funds which has the fees. We like to take
15 mutual funds based on Double sampling: First take 150 funds by simple random sampling. Second, do stratified sampling to take 15 using strata, Type.
Please do this double sampling and write down all procedures.
    3) Please try to install PHStat2 into your computer.
4)Please check this site again for more posting (if any)

# For the class, February 21st:
    1) Please read chapter 6.
2)Please check this site again for more posting (if any)

# Practice Problem for March 7th:

From Mutual Fund data, take 40 mutual funds based on simple random sampling. Then

a)      test whether type and objective are statistically independent.

b)      Do something to see the relationship between Return 2001 and Expense ratio

c)      Find the following probabilities.

                                                               i.      Probability that a mutual fund is growth (as a objective)

ii.      Probability that a large cap mutual fund is growth

iii.      Probability that a large growth mutual fund has a fee.

iv.      Probability that expense ratio is between 1.04 and 1.30

Project#2

Please read: (Note: Sorry for the cancellation. I have my voice rougly 60% back. How about this for project #2. Due date moves from 28th of March to 31st of March so that we can discuss any issue of project #2 on 28th of March and you do hand in by 31st of March with the modification if any. It is a lot better for each group members to communicate during the spring break. By the date of 28th of March, it is recommended that each group has an almost-done draft of project #2.
If you send me an email about any question of project #2 during the spring break, I do my best to answer.
Have a nice break.)
