Course GE Assessment Plan

(Attach to the departmental plan, together with a sample rubric or equivalent if possible.  As long as your department provides at least one sample rubric for each area now, it is acceptable to submit the remaining rubrics up until two weeks before the course/area combination is liable to be assessed.)

This is for the assessment of :

Course Number  64181________________

Course Name  Precalculus______________________

Particular Sections, or "All"  All   (NOTE:  Please treat all sections as a single block.)

Area (GE Category or Competency)  CT  (Critical Thinking)__________

(You may combine plans for courses or assessment areas, but be sure to clearly specify enough information about how each course will be assessed in each area.)

1.  The default method for selecting students to have their work assessed is to have Institutional Research randomly select entire course sections.  If students are to be selected by another method, please specify it.

We will use the default method.  However, as there is a common final, please treat the entire course as one section for the purpose of selection for assessment.

2.  Describe the assignment(s) that will be used to assess each learning outcome (objective) for this area, and state when in the semester the assignment will occur.  (To insure proper sampling of students, we suggest that these be required assignments.)

Questions on the final exam.  (Samples attached.)

3.  Attach a rubric (or equivalent) that describes the level of student performance that constitutes “Exceeds,” “Meets,” “Approaches,” and “Does Not Meet” for each learning outcome.  (Be sure to design assignments and rubrics so that clear distinctions can be drawn between the four levels.)

For each sample question, we include sample responses at each of the four levels.

4.  How will you ensure that the rubric will be used consistently by different instructors?

(This is "inter-rater reliability".  For example, samples of student work at each level could be provided, or instructors could evaluate some assignments together in a "norming session".)

This course has a common final exam.  The course coordinator leads a norming session before instructors grade the rest of their students.  The assessment questions will be included in this session.
