abbotn--absolutely correct they
almost always blame the boys--at this point in my life it is my
granddaughter who is in school and nothing much has changed from when I had
one boy and one girl in school years ago--I would go for the teacher's
meetings and get all sorts of complaints about my son not being able to sit
still and all sorts of praises for my daughter--truth was I never had any
trouble with my son at all but my daughter!!!! she
was a terror at home but knew how to behave in school while my poor son
just couldn't sit still--we are not doing anyone favors within our school
system's structure. Full Message

I got you beat by 1,576,800 minutes. My son(8)
comes home from school and rattles off 5 names of girls he doesn't want in
his class next year. His says they're feral(1),
they lie, cry and twist the truth to make whatever THEY did appear like
it's his fault. The teachers, mostly female, believe them and he gets in trouble.Fear that.(1)
Actually, he describes their behavior and I say they're feral. Full Message

Ha..that's
funny because I've told my family to make sure the cookies are good so smores are totally acceptable..if they do not play Me and Bobby McGee at some
point though I will find some way to get back at them :-).
Evolution isn't controversial to me. To me, controversial is huge
numbers of people proclaiming belief in the irrational for no good reason
beyond tradition. As for the male/female thing, Jack Nicholson said it best
when asked how he could write so effectively from a feminine perspective in
the movie "As Good as it Gets," and he said, "I think like a
man, and then I remove logic and accountability." We all know a doctor
who specializes in female anatomy is called a gynocologist.
What is the name of the doctor who specializes in the male anatomy?

Once again, Legalalian, you hit the nail on
the head. "Controversy" exists on a college campus only when the
ideas expressed by a white male are deemed "contoversial".
I'm sure that Hugo Chavez would not be nearly as "controversial"
in New Paltz....would he??

I'm not sure what the true controversy here is but I do believe that
schools have been skewed in favor of girls for years now and we do need to
take a look at how we are educating boys---it can't be the right answer to
accept that boys are more prone to ADD and we need to drug them up in order
to educate them. I have not read the book but from the title I would bet
this guy has some very valid points. Many times I have brought up the issue
of how important I think strong fathers are to their children and people do
even comment whether to call me a dope for thinking that way or to agree
with me--almost as if males have become irrelevant--bottom line is if we did
not need strong men in our daily lives we would have more success in the
single mom families. Colleges should not be afraid to discuss this because
as a woman and the mother of both a male and a female I think it is an
important issue.

Deva: with divorce rates high and
most women using the kids as a weapon during divorce it is not easy to to be a strong male image in a kids life. I had a very
good divorce, at the end I wound up with custody. However I had to go thru
hell at the beginning in order to even have minimal visitation rights.

legalalian--good for you and I know
you had to fight hard as the courts are truly blind when it comes to this
issue--I have a friend who's ex-wife is bi-polar as well as borderline and
she takes no medication for either of those conditions--he lost all rights
until he found a tough and very expensive lawyer and that tides turned a
bit for him. I have a very good relationship with my ex and as we never
fought we chose to stay married until our kids were grown--I was
particularly concerned about raising my son in a completely female household--like
it or not men are not just sperm donors and I think it is time to recognize
that the male mind is just as valid as the female.

pit :-).

I agree Diva. I am a single mom myself and for YEARS swore that my kids
didn't need a man. My ex is NOT a role model. I basically have to be mom
and dad. And while I see in my oldest son the respect for women that his
father lacked, I also see that he is just a little too sensitive. I have
always said that I am not raising boys, I am raising men, I really don't think I am cut out for the job! LOL My
son is basically a good kid, but there is just something missing and I can
only think that it is a "real" man in his life. I have dated
quite a bit over the last ten years, but I have never let any of my
boyfriends get close to my kids. I did not want to see them get hurt again.
But did my way of thinking do more harm than good?

NikkiZ--I've seen your posts before
and you appear to be strong mom and woman so I'm sure you've done well and
I would think it is better to not allow your kids to be hurt by
boyfriends--there are so many single moms out there and I believe that an
educational system that deals with the biological make-up of our boys would
go a long way in supporting you and other single moms--makes one pine for
the days of boy scouts, big brother organizations and clarity as to what
makes a boy a strong man.

Yep, pochuck--I've told my family to light
the fire and have a good time--must be my Irish blood because they do know
how to do a funeral--yogis will tell us "we come into the world crying
but go out with a smile on our faces".
