Measuring Emotional Intelligence:
Common Ground and Controversy

Glenn Geher (State University of New York at New Paltz) (Editor)

2004.  ISBN: 1-59454-080-2.  $69.

Since being popularized by Goleman's (1995) bestseller by the same name, the construct of Emotional Intelligence (EI) has permeated both lay and academic psychological communities. This construct has been broadly applied to address health, educational, and business concerns. An in-depth examination of EI research, however, suggests several issues regarding the utility of this construct. In particular, a great deal of variety exists regarding how EI is best conceptualized and measured.  The current volume is designed to address measurement issues regarding EI in a multi-faceted manner. The contributors to this volume comprise many of the top EI researchers to date. Across the chapters, issues regarding how to best measure EI are addressed by scholars whose views differ (often dramatically) from one another. The work presented here provides the interested reader with broad, in-depth, and critical perspectives on how EI is best measured, and, by extension, what EI really is.
