Spring 2012 General Interest Meeting
SIAM is welcoming students interested in math and science to join a vibrant, multidisciplinary group focused on finding practical applications of mathematics in both science and engineering. SIAM provides students an opportunity to perform and present independent undergraduate research with the support of professional mathematicians and physicists. This event will be held in the math department conference room (FOB S-12) at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, February 8th.
Spring 2012 first SIAM meeting Thursday January 26th 4:30pm
SIAM will have its first meeting of the spring 2012 semester January 26th at 4:30pm in FOB S-12, the mathematics conference room. This will be a precursor to our Spring '12 general interest meeting, and we'll be discussing leadership opportunities for SIAM members to actively participate in club affairs. Club officer openings will include web developer and treasurer.
SIAM Integration Bee December 7th
Wednesday December 7th SIAM will have its Integration Bee in CSB Auditorium from 5 to 7 pm. Participation is free for all undergraduate students. Signup starts at 4:30pm. Prerequisite is calculus II. Snacks and refreshments will be provided!
11/16 SIAM Lecture Series presents: Jeff Suzuki
SIAM lecture series presents Jeff Suzuki in CSB Auditorium at 5:30pm. Jeff Suzuki on the Mathematics of Social Advovacy or "How to win an election without really trying". In a representative democracy like our own, it is possible for a group to carve out legislative districts in such a way that they win a disproportionate number of seats: this is known as gerrymandering. Since gerrymandered districts often have bizarre shapes, it should be obvious that mathematics can be used to identify their existence and prevalence.

Bard Conference and Next Meeting
Now that we have the site back up and running, I want to catch people up on what we've been up to this semester:This past Sunday, October 16th a group of SIAM members and professors attended the Mid-Hudson Mathematics Conference for Undergraduates At Bard College. We saw a number of different undergraduate students and a few professors from local schools share some of their research with us, as well as a panel on REU opportunities and a panel for those interested in pursuing their PhD in mathematics.
SIAM LIVES!
The website is operational once more. Let's party!
Next Meeting Monday Feb 21st
The next SIAM meeting will happen on Feb 21st at 5pm in FOB S-12. We will start with a discussion to reach a consensus regarding how to best spend our time with SIAM this semester with respect to learning Mathematica and fortifying applied math concepts learned in class. Afterwards, we will move to CSB 145 computer lab to get an introduction to Mathematica with Alex.
Spring 2011 General Interest Meeting Monday Feb 7th
SIAM will have their first meeting of the semester on Monday Feb 7th at 5pm in FOB S-12. We will introduce everyone to the semester's plans and events, and there will be free pizza! Connect with class mates and other science and math students.
"Greenhouse Gases and Global Climate Models" Lecture November 30th PIZZA PARTY!!!
On Tuesday, November 30th in LC 109, professor Megan Ferguson from environmental chemistry will be giving a lecture on the fundamentals of GHG emissions and global climate change models. This lecture will be a great opportunity to learn about the empirical side of our carbon inventory project and to see how aplied math is used to construct the global climate models (GCM's). As usual, there will be plenty of PIZZA PIZZA so come hungry and bring friends! Lecture will be held in LC 109 at 7:00 pm.
