SUNY New Paltz provides users of Windows computers with a free
anti-virus program. If you are a Windows user who is using SUNY New
Paltz's free anti-virus system, Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate
Edition, it is time to update to the new system, which is called
Symantec Endpoint Security.
How to tell which anti-virus you have
If you are a Mac user, you do not have our anti-virus
package installed. Additionally, Symantec Endpoint Protection
will not work on your computer. Accordingly, you do not need to
do anything.
You might have Symantec Corporate Edition, which is the free
anti-virus package which we have provided to students and
faculty in the past. The older edition is NO LONGER BEING SUPPORTED. Check to see if you have the "old icon" in
your system tray, which is the group of icons next to the clock
in the lower right corner of the screen. If you have this icon,
it is MANDATORY that you update to Symantec Endpoint Security.
It will look like this:
You might already have Symantec Endpoint Security installed
on your computer. If this is the case, you do not have to do
anything more. Check to see if you have the "new icon" in your
system tray, which is the group of icons next to the clock in
the lower right corner of the screen. It will look like this:
You might have another anti-virus program installed because it came with your computer. Popular
anti-virus programs include Norton and McAfee. If you have one of these programs, it is
not mandatory for you to upgrade, although you will have to pay to keep them up to date.
You may have already installed another free antivirus software like AVG, AVAST!, NOD32, etc... If so, we assume you know what you are doing.
How to update to Symantec Endpoint Security
Download the new version of Symantec Endpoint Security to
the Desktop on your computer. You can find download links on the
Academic Computing website (http://acs.newpaltz.edu/resnet/antivirus/).
You will have a choice of 32-bit or 64-bit. Most users will want
the 32-bit version. If you are not sure, you can call the
Student Help Desk. The 32-bit version will work on ALL
computers. The 64-bit version will ONLY work on 64-bit
computers.
Disconnect your computer from the Internet. Do this by
removing the Ethernet cord from the computer and disabling any
wireless networks which you might be connected to. This step is
VERY IMPORTANT. If you are connected to the Internet, you may be
infected with viruses during the next few steps.
Uninstall your current anti-virus program. For this
tutorial, we are assuming you have the old Symantec Anti-Virus
Corporate Edition installed on your computer. The steps below
will be very similar (but not the same) if you are using a
different anti-virus program.
Open the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. In Windows
Vista, this control panel is called Programs and Features.
Locate Symantec Anti-Virus on the list of programs.
Then, click the Remove button to begin the removal process.
Once Symantec Corporate Edition has been removed from your
computer, shut the computer down and then restart the computer. Make sure your computer is NOT connected to the Internet. This is particularly important if your computer has a built-in wireless connetion.
Begin the installation of Symantec Endpoint Protection.
Locate the setup file that you downloaded in Step #1 on
the Desktop. Double-click on this file to open it.
The Symantec Endpoint installation will now begin. The
installation process is "silent" which means you will not
have to do anything to install it besides clicking on the
setup file as you did in Step #1 above. Unlike most program
installations, there is no wizard which pops up on the
screen. Just sit back, and let it work. It will take a few
minutes to complete the installation.
Verify the installation by checking to make sure that the
Symantec Endpoint Security icon is now located in the system
tray. You should see an icon which resembles this shield:
Shut down and restart your computer again. Once your
computer restarts, it is now safe to connect to the Internet
again.
You can open Symantec Endpoint Security by right-clicking on
this icon and selecting "Open Symantec Endpoint Security". When
you do this, you will see a window appear which looks the one
below:
The installation is now complete! Your computer is now
protected by Symantec Endpoint Security!
Using Symantec Endpoint Security
Once installed, you do not have to do anything else to operate
the Symantec Endpoint Security. The program will automatically
update and occasionally scan your computer for viruses. Enjoy your
new protection! The protection continues as long as you are a SUNYNP student (including over the summer and through breaks).
