DMCA Copyright info

The New Paltz College Web site and network are provided to support the College's teaching and learning mission. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), New Paltz College as an Internet Service Provider is protected from liability for the actions of its users as long as the College, upon notice of an infringement, acts expeditiously to remove, disable or block, the material that is claimed to be infringing, and repeat infringers' rights to use of the network are terminated.

At SUNY New Paltz all copyright infringement notices will be acted upon. We strongly urge students to familiarize themselves with the information on this site to minimize the risks of illegal activity and disruption of computer services.

The sharing of copyrighted materials at New Paltz is prohibited (most common types are music, movies & software).
Here is an “at-a-glance” view of the consequences of file sharing.

  • Legal Consequences
    • All infringements are recorded and New Paltz is required by law to offer them as evidence, should any legal proceedings ensue.
    • This means that even if you don’t get “caught”, you are still developing a record of illegal activity.
  • New Paltz Consequences
    • Three Strike Policy
      • 1st strike – Lose Internet connection (up to 10 days)
      • 2nd strike – Lose Internet connection & Student Affairs for disciplinary action
      • 3rd strike – Permanently lose Internet & Student Affairs for disciplinary action
    • Strikes do not go away.
    • Disciplinary action and probation become part of students records.
    • Students are held responsible for the use of their SUNY ID and NPCUID (includes all computer access and services).
