Geography of American Cities and Suburbs
SUNY-New Paltz, Department of Geography, Course #48541
- Summer 2003
Instructor - Dr. Larry McGlinn, 257-2696, mcglinnl@newpaltz.edu
In this class we will focus on the structure
of American cities and the suburbs that sprawl around them. We will focus
on why American cities look the way they do, both from the street, and
from the sky. We will also examine the notable strengths and weaknesses
of American urban areas. Almost 8 of 10 Americans live in cities
or suburbs, and the bulk of financial, political, and cultural power lay
in these places. American urban centers are important even on a global
scale. They are significant symbols for everyone from immigrants
looking for a new life to terrorists trying to strike at the heart of the
United States. Stay tuned; in coming weeks I will post a syllabus
and links relevant to the course.
